SELF-PORTRAIT

Calvin Herrmann_edited.jpg

Yocalvi (b. Calvin Herrmann) paints with a new meaning, tying together the worlds of the past with those of the new. These large-scale oil paintings build a bridge to the present, staging contemporary life within the visual language of the Impressionists & the Old Masters. His latest series The Neo-Renaissance takes up classical allegory and narrative to address the social issues of our moment: tech fatigue, disconnection, the need for the natural, and the search for the New World.

The through line is both playful and yet at times darkly truthful, paying homage to tradition while questioning what it can still offer us. Painted with bold, gestural impasto brushstrokes and striking compositions, each work attempts to envelop the viewer who stands before it, pushing out all peripheral distractions and asking for just a few moments of deeper contemplation as to where is

the train of humankind going?
